Just Moved In: 10 Things New Homeowner Should Know Before Moving Into Their House
April 26, 2018
Moving to a new home marks a new chapter in one’s life. While it can be exciting and thrilling, the big move can also be nerve-racking and exhausting. But before settling in to your new home, here are some things you might want to look into for a stress-free move.
1. Change The Locks
Install new locks as soon as possible. Realtors, maintenance staff, and the previous owners might still have their keys. Make sure to do this before you move in for peace of mind.
2. Start with a Clean Slate
With a fresh beginning in your new home, it’s probably the best time to do a thorough cleaning and paint your walls. This may also be the best way to know how effortless or hard it is to tidy up your new abode.
3. Locate the Circuit Breaker
Any house owner should know where the main power is found for safety and emergency purposes. Label the fuse accordingly to know which switch is supposed to be turned off when needed.
4. Design Your Space
Start by measuring your area. This can help you plan and estimate where your furniture and belongings go, and how you can add decorations and your personal touches to the house. You may also locate the plugs so you can identify where to place your appliances.
5. Never Forget the Utilities
Ensure that you have working electricity and a power supply once you get there. Don’t forget to set up your phone and internet utilities as well.
6. Put Up Your Hazard Preventions
Safety is always a priority in any home. Install a smoke alarm and get a fire extinguisher as precautions.
7. Make a Priority List
Keep track of the things you need to accomplish for your move. From safety concerns, unpacking, moving large furniture, and even the smallest essentials, write down every action done to stay organized.
8. Do an Inventory of Your Items
List down all your possessions. In this way, you can estimate how you can plan to move your items. It is also a great chance to declutter and leave or sell the stuff you don’t need anymore.
9. Get to Know the Location
Explore the area. Learn where the nearest hospital, police station, markets, and restaurants are, and find out what the accessible modes of transportation in the area are too.
10. Meet Your Neighbors
Getting acquainted with your neighbors can help you to get to know your new community, town ordinances, and homeowner association rules you need to abide by.
The whole process of moving to a new space is truly challenging and tiresome. But at the end of the day, seeing and living in your brand new house is fulfilling.
